Sio: Japanese-Italian Dining in Gangnam

Dish served at Siio restaurant

This is a Michelin Plate restaurant located near Gangnam-gu Office Station, Seoul.

The name is a clever play on words — derived from “sio” (salt) in Japanese and “sio” from the Italian “sioraffino” — hinting at the restaurant’s concept: Italian dining with Japanese influences. The food is consistently excellent overall, though it doesn’t quite deliver the level of astonishing performance that would warrant a Michelin star.

That said, for a meal priced just over $100, the quality is thoroughly satisfying. The wine selection isn’t as extensive as you’d find at other Michelin fine dining establishments, but it’s reasonably priced, and the sake selection is solid as well. Corkage is $30, and the restaurant is BYOB-friendly. The sommelier’s wine handling is top-notch. His wine knowledge runs deep, and his pairings favor the unexpected over the obvious.

Wine of the night

A glass of amber-colored wine sits next to a bottle labeled 'Pietradolce Sant'Andrea 2018' on a wooden table, with a backdrop of hanging wine glasses.

Pietradolce Sant’Andrea Terre Siciliane IGT 2018

(BYOB) Made from 100+ years old pre-phylloxera vines. Skin maceration for 6+ months, and bottle aged for 2 years before release. Gold in color, tropical fruit aroma and well ripe stone fruit nose, honey and wet flint. Some scent of cedar and brioche. Unlike the sweet aroma, it is bone dry in the palate. Can feel the phenolic bitterness due to the long skin contact. Acidity is high in nature.
